A Decade of Cleaning Our Seas: The 10th QLZH Foundation Ocean Bed Clean-Up

This past Saturday, 12th September, we proudly marked the 10th edition of our Ocean Bed Clean-Up, held at Ix-Xatt tal-Birgu near the Birgu Regatta Club.

Ten years on, the initiative continues to grow, and this year was no exception. Over 80 volunteers joined us, including 25 divers who worked beneath the surface to clear the seabed, alongside snorkelers, on-land volunteers, and SUP and kayak teams who helped bring the collected waste from the sea to the shore. Volunteers also enjoyed a guided breathing and stretching session with Yogalex to get them ready for the day ahead.

By the end of the clean-up, an incredible 2.7 metric tonnes of rubbish had been removed from the seabed and surrounding coastline – a testament to what community action can achieve when people come together for a shared cause.

We were also honoured to have the Mayor of Birgu, John Boxall, join us in support of the initiative.

Our CEO, Steve Mercieca, once again played an instrumental role in the day's success, out on the ground alongside our volunteers just as he has been for every edition of this initiative. Steve has long been a massive advocate for marine conservation and community-led environmental action, and his passion and hands-on involvement continue to be at the heart of why this event keeps growing year after year.

None of this would be possible without the generosity of our sponsors and partners, who we'd like to thank wholeheartedly: Dr Juice, Dive Systems, EZ Creations, Visit Malta, BMIT, Laferla Insurance, Red Cross, Transport Malta, Birgu Local Council, Malta Surf Club, Sensi Watersports, VIBE FM, Legacy Ventures, Yogalex, TVS, Insynk and CLA.

Ten years of protecting our marine environment, and we're only getting started. Thank you to every volunteer who has been part of this journey – here's to the next decade of clean seas!
